BEFORE AND AFTER- FAMILY ROOM
O! Finally the family room feels complete and I am able to show you how nasty it was before. Ever since we bought the place, the space always felt much colder compared to the rest of the house and lets not even mention the musky scent from the gross carpet that we inherited.
Savaging the carpets was not even an option with us. Like many of our other renovation plans, we always had to keep in mind that we have dogs and agree on what is the best way to keep up with their mess.
Which resulted with the idea of painting the concrete floor white.
Painting the floor white ended up being a really great idea as it made the space feel bigger and brighter. To add some contrast, we painted the fireplace black.
I must say, I rather be painting floors than walls. A couple coats of paint, a sealer and we were all set! Don't forget to come up with a strategy before painting, so you won't be cornering yourself and have to walk over wet paint to get out. Painting before going to bed was best for us, that way we didn't fuss about working our schedule around wet paint.
Concrete floor can get very cold in winter months, hence, we got a 9'x12' printed cream rug to bring some warmth in the space. The space started out with a couch, a couple of poufs, chairs and stuff essential enough to host our friends when they are over.
When hosting, I would sometimes observe how everyone would pick their spots, if they look comfortable and slowly digest the situation.
Me being me, I had to dress the space with tropical plants. Plants are another great way to bring warmth to the space and add ambience to any room. They can help bring any space alive. But this was a gradual process because I had to figure out where sun was shining into the space and which vents we wanted open. That way, I could figure what kind of plants I wanted to get and where they were going to be placed.
To avoid feeling like a catalog, we often would thrift and find really cool furniture pieces and accessories. Mixing up some vintage pieces and new store bought pieces helps create a more lived-in feeling .
Having ample seating was key, whether it was just the of us, 2 friends or huge group, I felt we needed couches we can buried in and hangout for hours. The "millions" of pillows and throws just makes the space a great napping area for us and the monsters.
When styling the room or any room, I would try and stick to same color tones, like brown, black and white tones. That way, the space will feel more cohesive and it will not matter if I decided to rearrange the space, everything will just end up like it belongs in the family room.
Thank you for reading! NOW, back to our next project! See ya all soon!
